Alec was educated and trained in the United States and Europe and has worked as a conservator at the Charleston Museum and as a Mellon Fellow in Furniture Conservation at The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. He has been in private practice for over 30 years extensively serving private clients, museums and historic houses. He is a professional member of the American Institute for Conservation. Alec lives with his family in the historic town of Glen Echo, adjacent to Bethesda and minutes from D.C.

Common Damage and Treatment using conservation grade materials.

  • Structural problems. Stabilization using appropriate adhesives and consolidants. Preservation and reuse of original materials including blocking, pins, metal fasteners.Disassembly/reconstruction of damaged or unstable joinery using matching period wood.
  • Veneer/inlay/marquetry, carving. Stabilization and loss restoration/compensation using matching period wood and materials.
  • Finish coatings. Preservation of old finish with selective removal of damaged or degraded surface layers. 
  • Decorative surfaces: painted, gilded, lacquerwork etc. Stabilization of existing and loss restoration/compensation.
  • Upholstery. Careful removal. Preservation of materials and restoration reusing original when appropriate. 
  • Insect damage. Treatment of infestation. Consolidation/reconstruction of damage.
  • Hardware. Cosmetic treatment and repair or replacement of missing with period pieces or reproduction copies or castings from original.
  • Frames. Structural and finish treatment.
